The Crucible Secured: World Snooker Championship to Stay in Sheffield Until 2045

The Crucible Secured: World Snooker Championship to Stay in Sheffield Until 2045

The Crucible’s Future Secured: A Historic Agreement for Snooker

Snooker fans around the world can celebrate — the sport’s most prestigious event, the World Snooker Championship, will continue to be staged at the legendary Crucible Theatre in Sheffield for at least another two decades.

A new long‑term agreement between the World Snooker Tour (WST) and Sheffield City Council guarantees that the Championship will remain in Sheffield until 2045, with an option to extend to 2050. It’s a landmark decision that preserves the Crucible’s unique atmosphere and cements Sheffield’s status as the global home of snooker.

Plans for a Revitalised Crucible

In addition to the new contract, ambitious redevelopment plans are being drawn up to transform the Crucible and enhance the fan and player experience. Proposals include:

  • An additional 500 seats in a new “theatre‑in‑the‑round” configuration

  • Improved spectator amenities and modernised backstage facilities

  • A comprehensive refurbishment expected to begin after 2028

The Championship will continue in the venue’s current design until 2028. During the renovation period, the event will move temporarily to an alternative location before returning to a fully modernised Crucible in the early 2030s.

Sheffield and Snooker – A 50‑Year Partnership

The Crucible first hosted the World Championship in 1977 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary at the 2026 Halo World Championship, held from 18 April to 4 May. The elite field of 32 players — 16 seeded and 16 qualifiers — will compete for the sport’s most coveted trophy and a £500,000 first prize, watched by a global audience of over 770 million.

From Sheffield’s theatres and sporting venues to its thriving hospitality scene, the new agreement promises lasting economic and cultural benefits for the city and its people — underscoring how deeply snooker is woven into Sheffield’s identity.

Reaction from the Snooker World

WST Chairman Steve Dawson hailed the deal as “the news players and fans around the world have been waiting for,” while Barry Hearn, President of Matchroom Sport, called the Crucible “the sport’s spiritual home.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the move as a victory for UK culture and sport, and Councillor Tom Hunt, Leader of Sheffield City Council, reiterated the city’s pride: “Sheffield loves snooker – and it’s here to stay.”

Snooker legend Stephen Hendry and current World Champion Zhao Xintong also voiced delight, each describing the Crucible as unmatched for its atmosphere and heritage.
